The idea behind the Pin-Sprites started as looking to create something that was sort of the opposite of the majority of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) artwork and design I was seeing on my friends and in stores. I focused on simple depictions of all subjects large and small, and on depicting a wide variety of characters.
I basically wanted them to look like the opposite of anything I had been seeing in mainstream Jiu-Jitsu clothing design, so what’s the opposite of spikes, and chains, and skulls, and intense imagery? Ordinary objects, simple lines, mild expressions, bright colors.
For the name ‘Pin-Sprites,’ ‘Pin’ came from my last name, ‘Maupin,’ and I got ‘Sprites’ from looking for a quick, cute word to describe these little cartoons.
The original plan was to print these up and sell them design by design at local tournaments, gyms, and stores, but as long as that’s not a thing I the RedBubble store becomes the second-best. The positive side of this change is they will be available to more people and on more products. Check out the wide variety of items available with these cute little designs on them.
To me these simple Pin-Sprites don’t just represent BJJ, either, they also work for Judo, Karate, and any other sport that utilizes the gi.
I have several designs, the schedule I’m holding to will be a new one each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Each design will be available in color and black and white options, as well as ‘with a face’ or ‘without a face’ options.
